Eight BJP and two SP candidates elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh

Ten candidates from Uttar Pradesh have been declared elected unopposed to India’s Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament.

Eight are from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and two are from the Samajwadi Party (SP).

The returning officer announced the result on October 9, the last day for withdrawing nominations.

The candidates are Dharampal Singh, Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan, Shruti Gangwar, Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani.

They were elected without a contest because no other candidates remained in the race.

The elections were needed because the terms of 10 Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh end on November 25.

Nathwani is due to collect his election certificate on October 12; the other candidates have collected theirs, in person or through representatives.
