Giant Nazaré statue collapses in Belém after heavy rain

A giant illuminated image of Our Lady of Nazaré collapsed in Belém, in northern Brazil, after heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday.

It had been installed at Portal da Amazônia as part of the city’s decorations for the Círio de Nazaré.

The major religious event was due to draw thousands of people to the streets for its main procession on Sunday.

No one was injured when the structure fell.

The city said the company responsible for designing and installing it had been contacted, and arrangements to remove the wreckage had begun.

The company is also expected to put up the image again.

Separately, a van caught fire near Belém’s cathedral on Saturday; emergency teams controlled the blaze, and no injuries were reported.

The fire’s cause had not been confirmed.
