Man killed by police gunfire in São Paulo after phone mistaken for gun

Gustavo Munis de Santana, 20, was killed by military police in Moema, in southern São Paulo, early on Saturday.

Investigators found 27 bullet wounds on his body, while police said officers fired 45 shots.

According to the police account, officers mistook the cellphone he was holding for a gun.

The officers had gone to the area after firefighters were called about a young man who was distressed and threatening to shoot himself.

Police body-camera footage showed Gustavo emerge from a dark area and point an object toward the street, where the officers were, according to the account cited by police.

Investigators collected the phone and bullet fragments and seized the officers’ pistols.

A police inquiry is underway, and the investigation remains open.
