Panama reports more than 200 aftershocks after 7.7-magnitude quake

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama on Oct.

9, and the country has since recorded more than 200 aftershocks.

The shaking damaged nearly 900 homes and infrastructure, including at least 14 bridges in Veraguas and Los Santos provinces.

At least 27 people were injured, and no deaths have been reported.

Damage assessments are continuing in remote communities, so the number of affected homes could rise.

The government declared a national state of emergency, allowing it to allocate up to US$100 million for relief.

The United States has pledged US$5 million and is sending a 20-member team to help with rescue work and infrastructure assessments.

Classes were suspended nationwide on Oct.

12, while Panama Canal shipping operations were not affected.
