Free ArtCraft apps offer alternatives to Adobe software
ArtCraft has released a set of free apps that resemble popular creative and productivity software.
They include PhotoCraft, which is similar to Adobe Photoshop, and FilmCraft, which is similar to Premiere Pro.
The developers describe the apps as open-source, clean-room reimplementations, and say they were made with AI assistance and Rust.
A review found that PhotoCraft’s layout and tools look very much like Photoshop, though some details differ.
The apps may appeal to people who want alternatives to Adobe’s subscription software.
But making software that works like another product is different from copying its code, and the source does not establish how ArtCraft developed the apps.
Their close resemblance to Adobe’s interface could still create legal concerns, and it is not clear whether Adobe will take action.
ArtCraft has released free software alternatives to Adobe apps including Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere Pro.
The projects are described on GitHub as open-source, clean-room reimplementations of well-known software.
The initial releases are PhotoCraft, LightCraft and FilmCraft, with other tools including VectorCraft, PDFCraft and EffectCraft.
AppleInsider tested PhotoCraft and found its interface very similar to Photoshop, though some features differ.
The article says the legal position is difficult to assess and notes that recreating an overall interface may remain a concern.
