Amazon unveils Android Alexa tablets with Google Play access

Amazon has announced three new Alexa tablets, moving its tablet line beyond the lower-cost Fire range.

The devices run Android and have access to Google Play, which offers more apps than Amazon’s Appstore.

They come in 8-inch, 11-inch and 12-inch models, priced from about $230 to $500.

Alexa+, Amazon’s AI assistant, is built into the tablets and can respond to questions about what is on screen, with screen access off by default.

The 12-inch Pro model can be paired with a keyboard and pen for work and writing.

The new tablets are due to start shipping on October 14 in the US, Canada and Mexico, and Amazon says they will receive at least four years of software updates.

Amazon says current Fire tablet owners will keep access to their apps and content, while one account says Fire tablets are expected to stop shipping in the next month or two.
