Giovanni Allevi dedicates new symphony to his late sister
Italian composer Giovanni Allevi has written a 10-minute symphony in memory of his sister Stella.
She died in July 2022, just days after Allevi learned he had cancer.
The work turns his grief and memories of their childhood into music.
Allevi has said Stella was four years older, a musician and a close intellectual and emotional presence in his life.
He held back his grief at first, then began an intense process of dealing with it with support from a psychiatrist at the cancer institute where he was receiving care.
The symphony gives musical form to a loss he says he struggled to express.
The NWD Philharmonie will perform it in Milan on October 14, at the Conservatory’s Sala Verdi, under conductor Jonathan Bloxham.
The performance is part of the concert season of the Foundation La Società dei Concerti di Milano.
Giovanni Allevi has dedicated his new 10-minute symphony, The Lost Time Symphony, to his late sister Stella.
The work draws on his grief after Stella died in July 2022, shortly after he was diagnosed with a tumour.
Allevi said music helped him express pain he had held in for three years and recall their childhood together.
The NWD Philharmonie, conducted by Jonathan Bloxham, is due to perform the symphony on 14 October at Milan’s Verdi Hall.
The performance is part of the concert season of the La Società dei Concerti foundation in Milan.
