Zhangzhou university library preserves records linking families across the Taiwan Strait
Minnan Normal University is in Zhangzhou, Fujian province, a place the story describes as an ancestral home for many people in Taiwan.
Its library collects books and historical records about Minnan culture and ties between Fujian and Taiwan.
The collection includes 67,000 Minnan culture publications, more than 5,000 genealogies from both sides of the strait, and over 2,000 volumes of old private contracts.
Researchers use these materials, and some genealogies have helped people from Taiwan investigate their family histories.
In May, a visitor named Huang Boxiang found a clue in the records indicating that an ancestor had crossed from Zhangpu to Taiwan and settled in Kaohsiung.
The library has also digitized 40,000 pages of valuable genealogies, making some records available in digital form.
