China criticizes Lai’s speech and defends military drills near Taiwan
Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te recently gave a speech in which he warned that mainland China was using military actions to pressure Taiwan and called for more defense investment and stronger public readiness.
Chinese defense ministry spokesperson Chen Xi responded by saying Taiwan is part of China and accusing Lai of promoting independence.
China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan is governed separately.
Chen said the Chinese military’s regular exercises around Taiwan are intended to deter independence efforts and outside interference.
He also accused Taiwan’s ruling authorities of increasing tensions and putting residents at risk.
