Former Wuhan mayor Zhou Xianwang sentenced to 14 years for corruption

Zhou Xianwang, the former mayor of Wuhan in China, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for corruption.

The sentence was handed down by Shangqiu Intermediate People’s Court in Henan province.

The court said Zhou used several government posts between 2003 and 2025 to help companies and individuals with contracts, business operations and administrative approvals.

His posts included party secretary of Huangshi, mayor of Wuhan and vice-governor of Hubei province.

In return, the court said, he accepted cash and property worth more than 60.5 million yuan, or about US$9 million.

Zhou was widely criticised for the initial handling of the Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan.

The sentence makes him face a long prison term, though no further legal steps were stated.
