Guangdong steps up AI push, with Tencent expected to help

Guangdong, China’s largest provincial economy, is making artificial intelligence a priority for the coming years.

On October 8, provincial Communist Party secretary Huang Kunming visited Tencent’s headquarters in Shenzhen, where company chief Ma Huateng and AI scientist Yao Shunyu took part in a meeting.

The province says its AI industry was worth more than 300 billion yuan in 2025, about a quarter of China’s total.

Guangdong wants AI to be used across industries, especially in manufacturing, where it hopes the technology can help solve real production problems.

It expects Tencent to contribute to AI infrastructure, computing capacity, models and practical applications.

Tencent has increased spending on AI infrastructure, including computing and data centres, and its Hunyuan model and AI work and coding tools have gained users.

The next challenge is to put AI into settings such as factories, shops and hospitals and turn that use into lasting revenue.
