Russian fugitive arrested in Salvador over suspected arms trafficking plans

A Russian man wanted in his home country was arrested in Salvador, in Brazil’s Bahia state, on Saturday.

Brazilian authorities say he is suspected of trying to set up a network to sell and distribute weapons, ammunition and drugs to criminal groups.

He is a former military member and was sentenced to life in prison in Russia for drug trafficking and using false documents.

He was wanted through an Interpol Red Notice, which helps locate people sought internationally.

The arrest was part of Operation Artemis, involving Bahia’s organized-crime task force, military police and Interpol.

Investigators are examining his alleged activities and plans in Brazil.

He was taken to the Federal Police in Salvador, where authorities will begin contacting Russian justice officials about extradition.
