AfD wins top post in Saxony-Anhalt parliament, straining Germany’s coalition

An AfD politician became president of the parliament in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.

It was the first time since World War II that a far-right party held this post.

The vote suggested that some members of the CDU, which governs with the SPD, supported him despite the CDU’s policy against cooperating with the AfD.

The dispute has added pressure to Germany’s already strained governing coalition.
