North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul breaks hip in fall

Herbert Reul, North Rhine-Westphalia’s interior minister, broke his hip in a fall at a police headquarters in Wuppertal.

A state interior ministry spokesperson said he tripped on a narrow step during an official visit and was receiving medical care in hospital.

Reul, 74, said he was doing reasonably well but would need to pause and let his hip heal.

The fall comes a day after he spoke publicly about speech problems that began after a summer operation to address trembling in one hand.

He said the cause of the speech problems is not yet clear.

Reul has been interior minister since 2017 and has said he plans to seek another term in the state parliament.

His party’s local executive has nominated him, but a selection meeting still has to confirm him on October 16.
