Weimer warns SPD against coalition with the Left in Berlin

Germany’s culture minister, Wolfram Weimer, has urged the Social Democrats’ leaders to prevent a coalition with the Left party in Berlin.

The Left won the Berlin election and is exploring a governing coalition with the SPD and Greens.

Weimer says such a partnership could damage the national coalition between the SPD and the conservative CDU.

The CDU has criticised the Berlin talks, including over allegations concerning antisemitism, views on Israel and Palestine, and links to criminal clans involving parts of the Left party.

The SPD and Greens made an agreement on tackling antisemitism a condition for talks, and the three parties have presented one.

SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf rejected Weimer’s warning and criticised the Union over its stance toward the far right.

The Berlin parties are still considering their options, including a possible coalition of the CDU, Greens and SPD.
