SPD in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern backs coalition talks with Greens and Left

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has approved starting coalition talks with the Greens and the Left party.

The state is in northeastern Germany, and its Minister-President, Manuela Schwesig, said the SPD’s leadership bodies and parliamentary group had agreed.

The three parties have completed preliminary talks, and their negotiators recommended moving on to formal negotiations.

The Left’s state leadership was due to decide that evening, while the Greens were due to vote at a party meeting on Saturday in Rostock.

If both parties agree, negotiations are set to begin on Monday at 11 a.m.

The parties plan to focus on policy first and discuss ministerial posts at the end.

If they form a government together, it would be the state’s first coalition of the SPD, Greens and Left; the state parliament is due to meet for its opening session on October 20.
