SPD and Left back coalition talks with Greens in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The SPD and Left party in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have approved starting coalition talks with the Greens.
The Greens are due to decide on Saturday at a party meeting in Rostock.
The three parties completed two weeks of preliminary discussions and their negotiators recommended moving ahead.
The SPD and Left have governed together, but they no longer have enough seats to form a majority after the state election.
The Greens would be needed to build a majority, while the AfD won the most votes in the election.
If the Greens also approve, coalition talks are expected to begin on Monday.
Party conferences will later vote on any coalition agreement.
The SPD, the Left and the Greens in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have recommended that their parties begin formal coalition negotiations after completing exploratory talks.
The parties’ governing bodies still need to approve the move, with SPD and Left party boards due to meet Friday evening and the Greens set to decide at a party conference in Rostock on Saturday.
The parties say their proposed coalition aims to provide reliability, stability and trust, and have already agreed on several priorities, including keeping childcare free and retaining all hospital locations.
The SPD and the Left no longer have a majority together, so they need the Greens to form a government; the three parties would have 39 of the state parliament’s 71 seats.
The AfD won the September 20 state election with 38.2 percent of the vote, ahead of the SPD with 35.5 percent; all three prospective coalition partners rule out working with the AfD.
The proposed partners have differences over renewable energy and the arms industry, while the coalition agreement would still need approval from party conferences.
