Seocheon opposes plan to merge marine biodiversity institute with ocean science body
The South Korean government plans to merge the National Marine Biodiversity Institute in Seocheon with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, whose main office is in Busan.
The government announced the plan last month, saying the two institutions have overlapping research work.
Seocheon County says the institute is central to its plans for a marine biotechnology cluster on South Korea’s west coast.
The county fears a merger could reduce the institute’s independent decisions and research, making it harder to attract companies and researchers.
It also says the institute was established as part of an agreement with the government after the planned size of a local industrial complex was reduced.
County officials have asked South Chungcheong Province and lawmakers to help keep the institute independent.
The county says it will continue working with them and relevant bodies to oppose the merger.

What people are saying
If we again reduce the functions of an institution established in the region for balanced national development, it could weaken the region’s growth opportunities.
We will work closely with South Chungcheong Province, the National Assembly and related institutions to protect the independence of the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea and Seocheon’s future growth base.
