Seoul aims to start construction on 30,000 homes by Christmas

Seoul says it wants construction to begin on 30,000 homes by Christmas as part of its effort to increase housing supply.

The city has already started construction on about 15,000 homes at 14 redevelopment sites this year.

It has signed a cooperation agreement with groups involved in 11 more projects, covering 16,117 homes, including sites in Hannam, Bangbae and Noryangjin.

The city plans to track remaining approvals and other delays, while project groups, builders and local districts work to prepare the sites.

Seoul says construction speed must not come at the expense of safety or quality.

The city’s longer-term target is to start work on 310,000 homes by 2031, and it is monitoring projects that may face delays.

Separately, a group representing redevelopment associations opposed transferring authority over areas with fewer than 500 homes from the city to local districts, warning it could lead to smaller, less viable projects and uneven decisions.
