Smriti Mandhana named UNICEF India celebrity advocate

Smriti Mandhana has joined UNICEF India as a celebrity advocate.

She will use her public profile to promote children's rights, gender equality and equal opportunities for girls.

UNICEF India announced her appointment on the International Day of the Girl.

Mandhana has said every girl should be free to choose her path and pursue her dreams.

Sachin Tendulkar, UNICEF's Regional Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia, welcomed her and said she could be a strong voice for children's rights.

Her appointment comes as she takes on a new role as captain of India's women's cricket team.

She is due to begin full-time white-ball captaincy in a home series against Zimbabwe.
