South Africa reduce Australia to 187-6 on shortened first day in Durban

South Africa took control on the first day of the opening Test against Australia at Kingsmead in Durban.

Australia chose to bat but lost six wickets for 124 runs as South Africa’s bowlers made early inroads.

Nic Maddinson, back in the Test team for the first time since 2016 after recovering from cancer, was out for a duck.

Matt Renshaw scored 46 not out and captain Pat Cummins made 33 not out as they added 63 runs without losing a wicket.

Australia reached 187 for six before bad light stopped play, with 24.4 overs lost.

The three-match series is part of the World Test Championship, and South Africa won the 2025 final against Australia.

Play is due to continue on the second day.
