Hip tightness is not uniquely linked to stress or past trauma

People often say that the hips hold tension from stress or past trauma, but evidence does not show that hips are especially affected.

Stress can increase low-level activity in muscles and nerves, while some stiffness comes from how tissues are built and used.

People with a history of trauma are more likely to have chronic pain and can be more sensitive to pain, but this is not specifically linked to the hips.

What people call “tight hips” may actually be pain or stiffness from the buttocks or back.

Hip discomfort can also involve the shape of the hip joint, irritated tendons or other factors, including stress, poor sleep and inactivity.

Gentle movement, such as walking or stretching, may ease muscular tightness, but stretching too far can cause pain.
