A real on-set accident became a memorable scene in Rain Man

Rain Man, released in 1988, stars Tom Cruise as Charlie and Dustin Hoffman as his older brother Raymond, an autistic man Charlie has only just discovered.

After their father dies, Charlie takes Raymond on a road trip, hoping to gain access to part of the inheritance.

During a scene in a phone booth, Hoffman passed gas, and Cruise reacted by asking if he had really done it.

The moment was not scripted, and Hoffman later said the fart was real.

Director Barry Levinson chose to keep the take, and Cruise later confirmed it was the one used in the film.

The scene became a comic moment in a film that won four Oscars, including best picture and best actor for Hoffman.
