‘Other Mommy’ leads North American box office with $27.5 million debut

‘Other Mommy,’ a horror film starring Jessica Chastain, opened in North American theaters at No.

1 with $27.5 million.

It follows a young girl who believes a supernatural creature has taken the form of her mother.

The film cost about $19 million to make and earned roughly $17.6 million overseas, bringing its global opening to about $45 million.

Reviews and audience ratings were poor, which may make it harder to keep drawing moviegoers in the coming weeks.

‘The Social Reckoning,’ Aaron Sorkin’s drama about a Facebook whistleblower, opened fifth with $5.5 million.

Its predecessor, ‘The Social Network,’ opened to more than $22 million in 2010, but the new film received weaker reviews and audience ratings.

The domestic box office has passed $8 billion for the year and is ahead of last year, though it remains below 2019 levels.
