China reports 1.079 billion basic pension insurance participants
China said 1.079 billion people were enrolled in its basic pension insurance system by the end of September 2026.
The figures were presented at a government briefing on employment and social security during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
The country also reported 251 million people enrolled in unemployment insurance and 327 million in work-injury insurance.
Together, the funds for these three types of social insurance had a cumulative balance of 11.2 trillion yuan.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security says it plans to expand coverage and improve services.
It will encourage people in flexible and new forms of work to join employee pension insurance, and expand access to company and personal pension schemes.
It also plans to make it easier to transfer social insurance between regions, offer more services nationwide, and strengthen oversight of fund safety and returns.
