Chongqing police break up 70 criminal groups in anti-gang campaign

Police in Chongqing, a municipality in southwest China, say they have broken up 70 criminal groups and arrested 430 suspects.

They have initially identified 274 suspected criminal cases and seized or frozen assets worth 8.3 million yuan.

Of the groups dismantled, 61 were classified as new-style criminal groups and nine as traditional gangs.

Police say newer groups increasingly use online platforms, threats and other forms of pressure rather than obvious physical violence.

The cases included alleged illegal debt collection, extortion, forced spending and crimes involving minors.

Police say they carried out two coordinated arrest operations, targeting leaders and other members inside and outside Chongqing, and are also investigating assets and possible protection by corrupt officials.

They say they will continue targeting these groups and work to prevent organized crime from returning.
