Brazil Senate to vote on ending six-day workweek next Wednesday
Brazil’s Senate is preparing to vote on a constitutional amendment to end the six-days-on, one-day-off work schedule.
Senate president Davi Alcolumbre says the first-round vote is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, after two more debate sessions next week.
The proposal would cut the maximum workweek from 44 hours to 40 and require two days off, without reducing pay.
The change would be phased in: first to 42 hours, then to 40 hours 12 months later.
The proposal has already passed the lower house and the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee.
It needs at least 49 votes in each of two rounds in the Senate, with further debate and a five-business-day interval normally required before the second round.
The government is seeking 54 senators’ signatures to request a faster timetable that could allow both votes before the election process ends; if senators amend the text, it must return to the lower house.
Senate President Davi Alcolumbre scheduled the final two debate sessions on the 6x1 work schedule proposal for Tuesday, October 13, and Wednesday, October 14, with a first-round vote planned for Wednesday.
The constitutional amendment would reduce the maximum workweek from 44 hours to 40 hours, provide two days off each week and prohibit cuts to pay.
The proposal sets out a gradual change: the weekly limit would first fall to 42 hours 60 days after promulgation, then to 40 hours 12 months later.
The Senate must hold five debate sessions before the first vote; a second-round vote normally requires a five-business-day interval and three further debate sessions.
The government is seeking 54 senators’ signatures, or leaders representing that number, to request a special schedule that could accelerate both rounds of voting.
The proposal has passed the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee; if senators amend it, it must return to the Chamber.
