Brazil's presidential candidates rally support ahead of October 25 runoff
Brazil’s presidential election is heading to a runoff on October 25 after no candidate won outright in the first round on October 4.
Conservative Senator Flavio Bolsonaro led that vote with 47%, while incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva trailed by two percentage points.
On Sunday, both candidates campaigned in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest state capital.
Bolsonaro met the state governor, mayors and city councilors as he sought political support, and promised more federal funding for municipalities to fight crime if elected.
Lula addressed a large rally and said he would increase federal involvement in public safety if reelected.
He also urged young people to vote and appealed to older citizens, whose voting is optional after age 70.
