Police detain pesantren teacher over alleged abuse of more than 10 students

Police in Bekasi, Indonesia, have detained a 28-year-old teacher at a pesantren, an Islamic boarding school, on suspicion of sexually abusing students.

Police say they have identified more than 10 possible victims, and the number could rise.

The investigation began after a family reported a case on 7 October.

Police say the alleged abuse may date back to 2023, with repeated sexual acts allegedly occurring from 2024 to September 2026.

One victim told investigators the teacher was the head of the school, and police are checking accounts against witness statements and other evidence.

Police are also investigating whether three other people were involved.

They are working with the city’s women’s and children’s protection agency to assess and support victims while the investigation continues.
