Busan man gets suspended sentence for threatening responding police with knife

A court in Busan, South Korea, sentenced a man in his 40s for threatening two police officers with a knife.

The officers went to his home on Jan.

19 after a suicide-prevention counselor reported that he had said he would take sleeping pills and die.

When police asked him to open the door, he shouted at them and threatened to kill himself.

He then held a knife to his neck and swung it at the officers who tried to stop him.

The court gave him six months in prison, suspended for two years, meaning he will not serve that term unless the suspension is revoked.

The judge said his previous convictions for violent and related offenses made the incident especially serious, but also took into account that he appeared to have acted impulsively after police arrived unexpectedly.

The court did not state what happens next.
