Power returns to parts of Batam after nearly 16-hour outage, water still off

A power outage affected parts of Batam, a city in Indonesia’s Riau Islands, on Monday, October 12.

Electricity began returning to some areas after the outage lasted nearly 16 hours.

Residents in Batu Aji and Tiban said their power came back at about 6 p.m., while a resident of Kabil said it returned around 11 p.m.

The utility said distribution networks had been restored in areas including Batu Aji, Sagulung, Tiban, Batam Center, Baloi, Batu Ampar, Nagoya and Punggur.

But residents said clean water was still not flowing even after electricity returned.

The outage disrupted daily life, with one resident saying it was especially difficult for families with children.

The available information does not say when water service will return or whether further power interruptions are expected.
