Turkish parliament speaker meets Council of Europe assembly president

Turkish parliament speaker Numan Kurtulmuş met Petra Bayr, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, during her official visit to Türkiye.

They discussed closer ties between the Turkish parliament and the assembly.

Kurtulmuş said a law linked to Türkiye’s “Terror-Free Türkiye” goal passed parliament with 467 votes, and a parliamentary monitoring commission will be set up to follow the process.

He said the goal includes ending terrorism and making democratic development and social peace lasting.

Kurtulmuş urged action on Gaza and said he was following an assembly report on suspending Israel’s observer status; he also sought Bayr’s support for the Turkish delegation’s work on Gaza.

He said Türkiye supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and invited Bayr to the COP31 meeting.

The two leaders also visited areas of parliament bombed during the July 15 coup attempt and left carnations there.
