Turkey’s AK Party files three compensation lawsuits over alleged false claims

Turkey’s governing AK Party says it has filed three compensation lawsuits over statements and broadcasts it considers damaging to its reputation.

The party’s secretary-general, Eyyüp Kadir İnan, said the cases concern Şaban Sevinç, journalist Timur Soykan and Yeni Parti spokesperson Zeynel Emre.

The party is seeking 500,000 lira from Sevinç, 600,000 lira over Soykan’s broadcasts and 500,000 lira from Emre.

One account also names BirGün TV in the case involving Soykan, while another names Soykan alone.

The party says the statements included false allegations that harmed its institutional standing.

İnan said the party respects press freedom and criticism but considers false claims a separate matter.

The lawsuits will now proceed through the legal system, and the party says it will pursue them.
