13 years of private school could cost up to $800,000

The cost of 13 years at an independent school in Australia could reach about $800,000 by the end of the next decade.

The estimate assumes fees rise by 5 per cent each year, but it is a projection, not a forecast.

At Sydney’s King’s School, Year 12 tuition for 2027 has risen above $50,000, before extra charges.

Schools say higher teacher wages, facilities, cybersecurity and energy costs contribute to fee increases.

Some Sydney schools raised fees by at least 6 per cent last year, and financial advisers say families may want to plan for increases of 5 to 8 per cent.

Actual fees are set year by year, so the final cost will depend on how they change and which school a family chooses.

Schools have the costs of teachers, which are a really big part of it; private schools also have demands for high-quality facilities, as well as energy costs.
