Indonesia plans 51,721 hectares for coconut development in 2027

Indonesia plans to set aside 51,721 hectares for coconut development in 2027, across regions from Sumatra to Papua.

The plan includes 42,721 hectares for expansion and 9,000 hectares to replace older trees, with about 154.58 billion rupiah allocated.

Food Affairs Coordinating Minister Zulkifli Hasan announced the plan at World Coconut Day events in Manado, North Sulawesi.

The government says global demand is rising as coconut is used more in food and drinks, while many Indonesian coconut trees are old.

It wants to provide new varieties that can bear fruit in about three years, compared with six to seven years for some existing varieties.

The program also aims to improve smallholder farm management and develop processing industries so Indonesia can earn more from coconut products rather than mainly supplying raw materials.

The planned work is part of a broader effort to strengthen smallholder farming, and the government says development will span planting, productivity, management and processing.
