Spanish left-wing coalition seeks Podemos deal after Rufián backs ERC
Four groups seeking to unite Spain’s left-wing parties outside the PSOE are trying to form the Frente Amplio coalition.
Gabriel Rufián, an ERC spokesperson who had promoted a broader left-wing alliance, has decided to run in the 29 November general election under ERC’s banner.
His decision has left the four groups—Izquierda Unida, Más Madrid, Comuns and Movimiento Sumar—with little time to reset their plans.
They are now inviting Podemos to join, with Ada Colau proposed as a leading figure and Emilio Delgado and Mónica García retaining key positions in Madrid.
The parties have not agreed on who should lead or how candidates should be chosen: Podemos wants open primaries, while Más Madrid wants to protect its positions in Madrid.
Podemos has begun its own selection process, with voting set for 14 and 15 October, and IU and Movimiento Sumar hope to reach a coalition agreement before Friday.
