Police separate groups after far-right demonstrators confront Madrid housing camp

A group of far-right demonstrators confronted people camping for housing in Puerta del Sol, a central square in Madrid, on October 12.

The housing camp had been there for two weeks.

The demonstrators carried Spanish and other political flags, chanted slogans and sang a fascist song, while campers shouted anti-fascist slogans.

Police deployed to separate the groups after campers reported assaults and provocation, and detained some people.

Some demonstrators may have come from a military parade held nearby for Spain’s national day, though this was not confirmed.

A campaign leader said sheep are due to pass through the square during Madrid’s Transhumance Festival on October 25 and that the campers would need to move.
