Mexico’s IMSS expands services as workers prepare to vote on pay increase
Mexico’s Social Security Institute, known as IMSS, provides medical care and other services to millions of people across the country.
Its director, Zoé Robledo, says services are operating nationwide and that the institute has added 109,000 workers since 2019, including doctors and nurses.
The number of people relying on IMSS has also grown, and the institute has opened hospitals and expanded some specialist services.
But rising demand and chronic illnesses continue to contribute to crowded services, waiting times and medicine shortages.
IMSS says it fills prescriptions for an average of 94% of the 769,000 people it serves each day, and patients can report an unfilled prescription online or by phone.
Workers, including active staff and pensioners, have held protests over institute operations and working conditions.
On October 14, workers will vote on a proposed 6.8% pay increase, which the institute says it respects.
