India proposes approval requirement for prescription drug ads by sellers
India’s health ministry has proposed extending prescription drug advertising rules to retailers, wholesalers and distributors.
The proposal covers medicines listed under Schedules H, H1 and X, which include some antibiotics and psychotropic drugs.
These medicines require medical supervision.
Under the existing framework, pharmaceutical manufacturers already need prior government approval to advertise them.
The proposed change would apply the same requirement to businesses licensed to sell or distribute the medicines.
The ministry’s proposal follows recommendations from the Drugs Technical Advisory Board.
It has not yet taken effect.
India’s Union health ministry has proposed requiring retailers, wholesalers and distributors to obtain central government approval before advertising medicines in Schedules H, H1 and X.
The proposal would add a new sub-rule under Rule 65 of the Drugs Rules, 1945, covering entities licensed to sell, stock, exhibit, offer for sale or distribute the medicines.
The Economic Times reports that the proposal follows recommendations from the Drugs Technical Advisory Board.
The medicines covered include prescription drugs such as certain antibiotics and psychotropic drugs, which require medical supervision.
The Times of India says existing rules already require prior government approval for advertisements of these medicines, while the Economic Times says that requirement currently applies to pharmaceutical manufacturers.
