US consumer confidence falls to its lowest level since May

A University of Michigan survey found that US consumer confidence fell in October to 46.3, its lowest level since May.

The index was below the 47.5 economists had expected and down from 48.1 in September.

It measures how Americans view current economic conditions and the outlook ahead.

Views of current conditions weakened, while expectations for future conditions edged higher.

Consumers’ expectations for both short- and long-term inflation rose for a second month, reaching their highest levels since May.

The survey director said high prices and borrowing costs were making it harder to buy long-lasting goods, with confidence falling sharply among lower-income consumers and people with smaller stock portfolios.

The survey suggests that dissatisfaction with the cost of living remains widespread, but it gives no indication of what will happen next.
