SpaceX spectrum deal deepens Starlink’s push into U.S. mobile service
SpaceX has agreed to buy licenses for up to 14 megahertz of spectrum in the 800 MHz band from Grain Management.
The deal is intended to help Starlink expand from satellite internet and limited phone connectivity into mobile service for U.S. consumers.
Low-band signals can travel farther and pass through obstacles such as walls, which could improve coverage indoors and in areas with tree cover.
SpaceX says it plans to combine its satellites with a terrestrial network to connect devices across the country.
The deal still needs approval from the Federal Communications Commission, the U.S. agency that oversees the spectrum.
Investors reacted by selling shares in Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, as the companies could face stronger competition.
Analysts have said that building a competitive network will take time, infrastructure and capital, so the near-term threat to established carriers may be limited.
SpaceX agreed to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz low-band spectrum portfolio, which includes licenses for up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum.
SpaceX says the spectrum could help Starlink expand from satellite-to-cellular service into a broader mobile offering in the United States.
Low-band signals can travel farther and pass through obstacles such as walls, potentially improving indoor coverage when combined with Starlink’s existing satellite capacity.
The deal is subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission, and SpaceX plans to combine satellite connections with a terrestrial network.
Shares of Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile fell sharply after the announcement, while SpaceX shares rose slightly.
Analysts cited in the reports said the move could strengthen Starlink’s long-term prospects, while noting that building a competitive terrestrial network would require time, infrastructure and capital.
