Iraq’s central bank shields some traders from new dollar exchange costs

Iraq’s central bank says traders will not be charged the new exchange-rate difference on import-payment transfers bought and covered at the previous rate before October 7.

The announcement follows a planned change in the 2027 federal budget, raising the official dollar rate from 1,320 to 1,520 Iraqi dinars.

The change has unsettled markets, and the dollar has reached 1,665 dinars on the parallel market.

Prices of basic goods and electrical appliances have also risen sharply.

Traders whose import transfers were due before October 7 are urged to contact their banks and check that the payments have been processed.

They can complain to the central bank if a transfer is delayed or a bank demands extra money.

The bank says it is also working on special foreign-trade cards to help small traders finance imports.
