Niccolò Biancalani elected head of Italy’s family doctors’ union

Niccolò Biancalani has been elected national secretary of Fimmg, Italy’s federation of family doctors.

The vote took place at the union’s congress in Villasimius, Sardinia.

Biancalani, 44, previously led Fimmg in Tuscany.

He succeeds Silvestro Scotti, who had led the union since 2016 and is becoming its president.

Biancalani says he wants to improve doctors’ protections and working conditions, increase resources and keep family doctors central to local health services.

He also wants to make the profession more attractive to young people.

A key next step is negotiating a new national agreement for 2025–2027, with talks expected to begin after a government guidance document is issued.
