Turkish home textile sector plans overseas wholesale hubs
Turkey’s home textile industry exports about $3.2 billion worth of goods and wants to grow beyond its traditional reliance on Europe.
The industry association says Turkish firms have a strong share of European imports but much smaller shares in the United States and Africa.
It plans to establish shared warehouse and wholesale centres in the US, Europe and Africa, where groups of 20 to 40 companies could sell goods in one place.
The aim is to let buyers purchase stock quickly and make online orders easier to fulfil.
The first planned African step is a three-day home textile fair in Ghana, alongside talks to rent a warehouse of 5,000 to 6,000 square metres.
The industry is seeking government support for shared warehouse costs, and its proposals have received positive responses from officials, according to the association’s head.
The association also says the sector needs to move beyond conventional production and focus more on technology-based textiles.
Turkey’s home textile sector plans to establish large warehousing and wholesale hubs in Europe, the United States and Africa to expand exports and reduce reliance on Europe.
The initiative is modelled on Chinese firms’ use of overseas warehouses and would bring 20 to 40 Turkish companies together at each hub.
Ghana is set to be the sector’s first step into Africa, with a three-day home textile fair and talks to rent a 5,000-to-6,000-square-metre warehouse.
Industry association head Murat Şahinler said the sector has sought support from Turkish government officials and received positive responses.
He said Turkey has a 1.8% share of the US home textile import market and about 0.2% of the African market.

What people are saying
20-40 of our companies will come together to establish Turkish Home Textile Hub points, operating on the department store model.
In the 14 billion dollar US import market, our share is only 1.8%.
Showrooms no longer work for becoming fast and permanent in markets.
The important thing is for activity to begin in the market.
