Türkiye’s wind capacity could cut gas imports by $4 billion a year

Türkiye’s wind power capacity is more than 16 gigawatts.

Turkish Wind Energy Association chairman Ibrahim Erden says this could cut the country’s natural gas import costs by nearly $4 billion a year at current prices.

His estimate is based on each 1,000 megawatts of wind capacity reducing annual gas import costs by about $250 million.

Renewable sources have produced more than 40% of Türkiye’s electricity in recent years, and their share topped 60% in the first eight months of the year.

Türkiye aims to reach 120 gigawatts of combined wind and solar capacity by 2035, while the association wants wind to make up 48 gigawatts.

Reaching the broader target would require adding around 8,000 megawatts of wind and solar capacity each year.

Erden says reaching the association’s wind target could roughly triple wind-generated electricity and raise annual gas import savings to $10 billion to $12 billion, based on current prices and production assumptions.
