China Seeks Stronger Safety Checks for Car Designs and Testing
Four Chinese government departments, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, have proposed new rules for car design and testing.
The draft is intended to address companies copying product ideas and conducting insufficient tests.
From January 1, 2027, new car applications involving innovative designs would have to include technical details and safety and environmental assessments.
The draft would ban fully concealed door handles, as well as folding and flexible displays.
New products would also need tests covering reliability, durability, software, weather conditions, heating and cooling, and protection against leaks.
Environmental testing would have to last at least one year, and reliability tests would have to cover at least 30,000 kilometres.
Models already approved would need to submit technical details and test materials by July 1, 2027, or unsafe models would have to stop production and be recalled.
China’s industry ministry and three other departments have sought public comment on draft rules for car design and development testing.
The draft would ban fully concealed door handles and folding or flexible display screens.
Newly submitted products would have to undergo testing in areas including reliability, durability and environmental adaptability.
Environmental adaptability testing would last at least one year, and reliability testing would cover at least 30,000 kilometres.
The draft says the requirements are intended to improve vehicle safety and address insufficient testing by some manufacturers.
