Bangladesh’s First Nuclear Plant May Connect to the Grid by Late November
Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant, Rooppur, is expected to connect its first unit to the national electricity grid by the end of November.
The plant is about 160 kilometres from Dhaka and is being built by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission with Russian support.
Its two reactors are designed to produce 1,200 megawatts each.
Fuel loading began in April, and the first unit is expected to start with an initial supply of 300 megawatts.
Russia has provided a state loan of $11.9 billion and is supplying equipment, nuclear fuel and technical assistance.
When fully operating, the plant is projected to meet up to 12% of Bangladesh’s electricity needs.
Bangladesh’s government will make the final decisions, while Russian specialists are working with local operators to support safe and effective operation.
