Flash flood prompts evacuations along Nepal’s Budhi Gandaki River

A flash flood swept through the Budhi Gandaki River area in north-central Nepal on Sunday, destroying homes and other structures.

Authorities evacuated villagers and told others to move to safer places and remain alert until late Sunday.

The river joins the Trishuli and is an important waterway near Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital.

Officials were investigating what caused the flooding, and it was not clear how many villages were affected.

There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

Nepal is also recovering from an August flood near the China border that killed more than 1,400 people and left thousands missing.

Authorities said they were shifting that earlier disaster’s response from searching for victims to rebuilding damaged roads and bridges, while the government estimated reconstruction would cost $4.77 billion.
