Smart brings back its two-seat Fortwo as it seeks to revive sales

Smart, a car company jointly owned by Mercedes-Benz and China’s Geely, is bringing back its two-seat city car as the electric #2.

The original Fortwo became known for being small and easy to park in cities, and more than 350,000 are still on the road in Germany.

Smart plans to present the new model at the Paris motor show.

The company has faced years of losses and falling sales, including a global loss of more than $360 million last year and deliveries of fewer than 60,000 vehicles in 2025.

The #2 is 2.75 metres long, is due to cost less than €20,000 and is expected to have a range of up to 290 kilometres.

It will be built in China to keep costs down.

Smart says the model should become profitable, and its success could be important to the future of the brand.
