German postage could rise by 20.35% from 2027
Germany’s postal regulator has proposed allowing Deutsche Post to raise some postal prices from January 2027.
The proposed increase for letters and business mail is up to 20.35%, while private-customer parcel prices could rise by up to 10.72%.
The possible increases would apply for two years, but the regulator has not yet set the final limits.
Deutsche Post will decide how to apply them to individual products, so the price of a standard letter is not yet known.
If the full increase were applied evenly, a standard letter would cost about €1.14 instead of the current €0.95.
Letter volumes have fallen as people and businesses use more digital messages, while the postal service still has costs for postboxes, branches and delivery workers.
The regulator will consult the postal sector before setting the final limits, after which Deutsche Post will set its prices.
Germany’s postal regulator says postage could rise from January 2027, with private-customer letter prices allowed to increase by an average of 20.35 percent.
The proposed increase is the largest described in the articles and would apply for two years.
The Deutsche Post would decide how to distribute the permitted increases among individual products.
The regulator also allows increases of 10.72 percent for private-customer parcels and 20.35 percent for business mail.
Falling letter volumes and rising costs are cited as reasons for higher prices.
